Venn diagram template with universal set
The rectangle is the universal set U (or ξ): everything being considered. It gives you a place for items in neither set, which most maths and probability questions need.
How to fill in this template
- Write the total in U if the question gives one.
- Fill the overlap A ∩ B first.
- Subtract to find A only, B only, and the “neither” region.
Three ways to use it
- Edit online above, then download PNG or SVG for slides and documents.
- Print the PDF: page 1 in light colour, page 2 as plain outlines for photocopying.
- Paste lists in the “From lists” tab and the overlaps fill themselves.

Questions people ask
Can I print this template?
Yes. Download the PDF in US Letter or A4. Page 1 is lightly coloured and page 2 is plain outlines, which uses less ink and photocopies well. Both have Name and Date lines for classroom use.
Why draw a rectangle around a Venn diagram?
The rectangle is the universal set. Without it there is nowhere to put items that belong to none of the sets, or to shade complements such as A′.
