The regions of a 2-set Venn diagram

Two overlapping circles give you three regions: what is only true of the first thing, what is only true of the second, and what they share. It is the standard compare-and-contrast organiser, sometimes called a double Venn diagram.

A two-set diagram has 2² = 4 regions counting the outside: A only (A ∩ B′), B only (A′ ∩ B), both (A ∩ B), and neither ((A ∪ B)′), which you only see when the universal set rectangle is switched on.

In the editor’s Text tab every region is listed with its name and set notation, so you always know where an item belongs. Comparing real lists (class rosters, survey answers, gene IDs)? Paste one list per set into the From lists tab and every item is sorted into the right region, with counts and percentages if you want them.

Questions people ask

What is a double Venn diagram?

It is another name for a two-circle Venn diagram: two overlapping circles used to compare two things. Differences go in the outer parts and similarities go in the overlap.

How many regions does a 2 circle Venn diagram have?

Three inside the circles (A only, B only, both), plus a fourth region outside both circles if you draw the universal set.

Can I make one circle bigger than the other?

Yes. On the Sets tab each set has a size slider, and you can drag a set’s name to slide its circle further in or out.
