The regions of a 5-set Venn diagram

Five sets need 31 regions inside the shapes (32 with the outside). Five identical ellipses rotated around a centre, the symmetric design popularised by Branko Grünbaum, is the standard way to fit all of them. Every region here is real and clickable.

Five sets give 2⁵ = 32 regions: 5 single, 10 pairs, 10 triples, 5 quadruples, 1 region for all five, and the outside.

In the editor’s Text tab every region is listed with its name and set notation, so you always know where an item belongs. Comparing real lists (class rosters, survey answers, gene IDs)? Paste one list per set into the From lists tab and every item is sorted into the right region, with counts and percentages if you want them.

Good uses for 5 sets

  • Comparing five options or five data sources
  • Bioinformatics style overlaps (genes found in several samples)
  • Showing that a thing sits at the meeting point of many categories
  • A striking slide when the overlap is the message

Questions people ask

Can a Venn diagram have 5 circles?

Not with true circles: five circles can make at most 22 regions counting the outside, well short of the 32 needed. A five-set Venn diagram uses ellipses or other curves, as this maker does.

How many regions are in a 5 set Venn diagram?

Thirty-one inside the shapes, and 32 if you count the area outside every set.

How do I keep a 5 set diagram readable?

Label only the regions that matter, use short words, raise the Text size, and use the Outline style so text sits on white.
