How to make a Venn diagram

The quick way online, plus exact steps for Word, PowerPoint, Google Docs and Google Slides.

Online in about a minute

  1. Open the Venn diagram maker and choose 2, 3, 4 or 5 sets.
  2. On the Sets tab, type a name for each set and pick a colour.
  3. Click a region on the diagram and type its items, one per line.
  4. Optional: add a title, switch on the universal set, or shade regions for maths.
  5. Press Download PNG (or SVG, Copy image, Print, Copy share link).

Before you draw: plan the sets

Write down what you are comparing and list your items. For each item ask “which sets is this in?” Items in every set go in the centre; items in just one set go in that set’s outer part. If a question gives numbers instead of items, use the Venn diagram calculator to fill each region.

How to make a Venn diagram in PowerPoint

  1. Insert → SmartArt → Relationship → Basic Venn → OK.
  2. Type set names into the text pane. Add a shape for a third circle; delete one for two.
  3. To write in an overlap, Insert → Text Box and place it over the overlap.
  4. Recolour with SmartArt Design → Change Colors, or Format Shape → Fill with 40–50% transparency.

Faster alternative: build it here, press Copy image, and paste onto the slide. The transparent PNG sits cleanly on coloured slide backgrounds.

How to make a Venn diagram in Word

  1. Insert → SmartArt → Relationship → Basic Venn.
  2. Enter names in the text pane; add or remove shapes for the number of sets.
  3. Add text boxes (Insert → Text Box, set to No Fill and No Outline) for the overlap text.

How to make a Venn diagram in Google Docs

  1. Insert → Drawing → + New.
  2. Choose Shape → Shapes → Oval. Hold Shift while dragging to draw a circle.

How to make a Venn diagram in Google Slides

  1. Insert → Shape → Shapes → Oval, holding Shift for a circle.
  2. Fill colour → Custom → drag the transparency slider to about 50%.
  3. Duplicate (Ctrl/⌘ D) and overlap the circles; add text boxes.

Or insert the PNG or SVG from VennMaker via Insert → Image → Upload from computer.

Tips for a clear Venn diagram

  • Keep items short: two to five words each.
  • Use contrasting colours so each overlap is easy to tell apart. The Gel style mixes colours automatically.
  • Label every set outside its circle, not inside where it competes with items.
  • Use the fewest sets that answer your question. Three is the sweet spot for most slides.

Questions people ask

Does Google Docs have a Venn diagram template?

Not built in. You can draw one with Insert → Drawing → New and overlapping ovals, or make it here, press Copy image and paste it into your document.

How do I make overlapping circles see-through in PowerPoint?

Select a circle, open Format Shape → Fill → Solid fill and raise Transparency to about 40–50%. Repeat for each circle.

Where is the Venn diagram in Word?

Insert → SmartArt → Relationship → Basic Venn. It supports text in the circles but not easily in the overlaps, so many people add text boxes on top, or insert an image made here.

An online maker: choose the number of sets, type names and items, and download. It takes about a minute here, with no account.
